Most people know that high choleterol is bad for a healthy hearth. However, most of our foods are loaded with bad cholesterol. In addition to eating low cholesterol foods, using these tips can help lower your cholesterol. Eat a cup of dried apples a day. Drink a tbs of extra virgin olive oil or add it to your salad. Eat 2-3 servings of veggies (carrots, green beans, cauliflower, asparagus, broccoli, etc) a day with fish instead of meat. Add Almonds to your morning cereals like cheerios and raisin bran or oat meal. Ask your doctor if you can take the Omega 3 fatty acids over the counter. Do not forget to exercise.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

As a Nurse Practitioner, I practice western medicine when caring for my patients. However, I also believe in alternative medication especially for preventive measures or as complements to Western medication.

Alternative medication modalities includes herbal supplements, prayer, meditation, acupuncture and what is now being called Functional Medicine. There is an Institute of Functional Medicine located in Gig Harbor, Washington, DC. Dr. Emmanuel Quaye, my supervisor who is an Internist attended a six-day intensive Functional Medicine training in September 2009. In his press release, he described Functional Medicine as, "An integrative, science-based health care approach that treats illness and promotes wellness by focusing assessment on the biochemically unique aspects of each patient, and then individually tailoring interventions to restore physiological, psychological and structural balance." Dr. Quaye states that life style is a big factor because research estimates that 70-90% of the risk of chronic disease is attributable to lifestyle. That means that what we eat, how we exercise, what spiritual practices we engage in, how we control stress, all play key roles in our overall health. The press release also had this quote which summarized the justification for Functional Medicine. "...we have been able to identify modifiable behavioral factors, including specific aspects of diet, overweight, inactivity, and smoking that account for over 70% of stroke and colon cancer, over 80% of coronary heart disease, and over 90% of adult-onset diabetes." (Willett, WC. Science, 2002:296, 695-697).



If you have a condition that alternative medicine can help, it may be wise to seek out the practitioners that incorporate these modalities in your community. I have observed that I hardly see Chinese people in my hospital. I think it may very well have something to do with the alternative medicine they use heavily.

MEDITATION TIPS

I meditate every morning for an hour. You need a quite place for serious meditation. I sometimes wear ear blogs because I have young kids. A lot has been written about the benefits of meditation. They include:

  3. Improves focus and concentration
  4. Lowers oxygen cosumption
  5. Helps decrease blood pressure

  I encourage you to invest in a good tutorial program if you do not know how to meditate or just want to improve on your technique. Spring Forest and Centerpoint Research Institute, both have great programs. They are fairly expensive, you may begin with just the meditation CD and go from there. The internet has
countless information on meditation and its' benefits.

I recently announced my intention to start a spiritual book club in my town. As I began thinking of my first topic, it made sense to begin with the meaning of spirituality.
First, here is a synopsis how my spiritual journey started. I have the habit of frequently wondering where humans came from, what we are here for, why it seems like we do not really understand the purpose of life and our individual life purposes. I always find stories about life's meaning captivating. To my greatest surprise, I became chosen to find answers to the spiritual questions that captivate me.

About three years ago, I was sitting in my living room watching TV with my young kids and my mother. While sitting in the room where I was only present physically, I was startled by a voice that caused me to be jolted from the couch I was sitting in. Family members in the room began asking, "What's wrong, what's wrong." I replied, :A voice is telling me to find a way to help people seek him and find him." The voice continued, "So many people are depressed, angry, hopeless, addicted, and unfulfilled. They continue to seek answers in the wrong places and end up empty and disillusioned. I created them. The answer they are seeking lies with me." I tried convincing the voice that the wrong messenger has been chosen to no avail. Thus, began my spiritual journey. My three years of intense study ended with a degree in Enlightenment--a degree I conferred on my self by the power invested in me by "the Voice." I have four college degrees but quick to point out that this informal degree has changed my life in the most remarkable way that's beyond description. So, what is spirituality?

To me. it is the practical aspect of religion. It is a way to discover who we are, what our purpose is , our relationship to each other and above all, how to empower ourselves to manifest our highest potential. It gives one the faith needed to "seek first the kingdom believing that everything else will be added unto him/her." Spirituality lifts the veil that conceals our true identity. When we become spiritual, we become one with universal energy, divine intelligence, substance and abundance. Spirituality allows us to realize the interconnectedness of all creation. It is the unveiling of our inner light by peeling the layers that blind us. Layers such as conformity, addictions, race, hatred, ego, sexism, anger, anxiety, violence, junk TV and much more.

HEALTH

Health is a word with many facets. My concept of human health is holistic. Holistic health deals with the whole person. It addresses the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social components of human health. I usually tell my patients to write down or tell me what their health goals are in the key areas of mind, body and spirit. A lot of them give me a strange looked when I make that request. Most have never contemplated their health goals. People have career goals, financial goals, and relationship goals. These goals are short-term or long-term and includes everything but health. However, physical and spiritual health are the building blocks of life. In this section of my blog, I will be sharing some key ways to stay healthy physically, mentally and emotionally. You will be able to share your thoughts, insights, questions and experiences as it pertains to health.
